Communication, Reasoning, Technical Awareness, Ethics and Teamwork
6.1 Professional Communication
FAA work often depends on information being accurate, timely, concise and understood by the recipient. Good communication is not simply “speaking well.” It includes listening, clarifying ambiguous instructions, selecting the right channel, documenting important information and adapting technical detail to the audience.
- Use precise language and avoid unnecessary ambiguity.
- Confirm critical information when misunderstanding could affect safety or task completion.
- Escalate through appropriate channels rather than bypassing procedures without reason.
- Separate facts from assumptions.
- In written communication, make the requested action, deadline and supporting facts easy to find.
- When communicating technical information to a nontechnical audience, preserve accuracy while explaining terms.
6.2 Analytical Reasoning and Problem Solving
Strong reasoning also requires knowing when information is insufficient. Before acting, identify which facts are confirmed, which are assumptions, and which must be obtained from an authoritative source or responsible person. In safety-sensitive work, a well-supported decision made after checking a critical fact is preferable to a faster decision based on an unverified assumption.
Analytical reasoning means moving from evidence to a defensible conclusion. In FAA-style work, the best answer is often the one that identifies the actual problem, checks the relevant facts and constraints, evaluates risk, follows procedure and verifies the result.
- Define the problem.
- Separate known facts from missing information and assumptions.
- Identify safety, legal, procedural, time and resource constraints.
- Generate reasonable options.
- Compare consequences and risk.
- Choose the option that satisfies mandatory requirements and best addresses the problem.
- Implement, communicate and document as required.
- Verify the outcome and adjust if new evidence appears.
Common reasoning error: Choosing the fastest action before checking whether it is safe, authorized or based on complete information.
